Kosher Burgers Go Upscale

Think Shake Shack, but with non-dairy shakes.

Kosher meat lovers are welcoming a deluge of high-end burger options in Manhattan.

Mass-produced, frozen, dry patties are out, thanks to the closing of all Burgers Bar locations and most Kosher Delight ones.

In their place are Teaneck, N.J.’s Gotham Burger, which is opening a location on the Upper West Side (Amsterdam Avenue between 94th and 95th streets), and Amsterdam Burger Company (ABC) by Mike’s Bistro, just five blocks south.

Gotham’s Avi Roth said, “We have been inundated by Upper West Siders who have been begging us to open. The Upper West Side branch is nine months in the making … [and we already] do a lot of catering to the [area].” When asked about the Gotham name being in New Jersey first, Roth replied, “We were actually looking at space in Manhattan, but the Teaneck space fell into our lap.”

Not to be outdone, kosher mainstays in Midtown, Mr. Broadway and Le Maraís, have recently revamped their menus to include higher end, more sophisticated burgers.

Mr. Broadway’s menu updates (for the better) coincided with the revamping of its restaurant into a modern, sophisticated eatery after Sukkot last year. The menu includes options similar in style to the burgers on ABC’s menu including their BBQ burger, which according to Chef John Dewine, comes with a house BBQ sauce, fried sunny-side-up egg, and crispy onion strings. Other burgers include a spicy one made with Harissa and “blistered” jalapenos, along with a Hawaiian burger that combines fresh pineapple with grilled salami.

On Facebook, Le Maraís recently announced the launch of a new burger menu, including a $21 jumbo burger stuffed with beef cheeks, which is presented beautifully on a wooden cutting board slab. Asked why the restaurant created a separate burger menu, chef and owner Jose Meirelles explained that the “popularity of burgers in high-end restaurants in general was an initial catalyst.” Additionally, they wanted “to accommodate the Clubhouse Cafe die-hards” after that restaurant closed across the street last year.

Wolf & Lamb, also in Midtown, has consistently had gourmet burgers on its menu, including beef, salmon, lamb, turkey, and ribeye options. The eatery’s general manager, Chaim Kaminker, explained that burgers are “the most popular meal in America” and that his restaurant is “always searching for the ultimate gourmet burger.”

As for ABC on the Upper West Side, those who have eaten there discuss both the quality and quirkiness of the restaurant. ABC only uses pasture-raised, antibiotic-free and hormone-free meat from Grow and Behold Foods, which proponents say makes the burgers healthier and tastier.

Bravo Kosher Pizza New Location Financial District

“Bravo Pizza” Taking Over “Cravings” in Downtown Manhattan

Bravo-pizza-kosher-downtown-lower-manhattan-nyAccording to GreatKosherRestaurants:

Bravo Pizza has taken over the Wall Street restaurant, Cravings located at 17 Trinity Place. Although Bravo Pizza Financial District is a non-kosher chain in NYC, they opened a kosher pizzeria on Broadway in midtown last year.

The phone number is remaining the same (212-344-1111) and they will keep the frozen yogurt store next door.

The midtown location has been very successful, in spite of (or perhaps because of) it’s small location, whereas the former kosher pizza king in midtown, J2, has been relegated to a side street a few blocks away, now known as Jerusalem Cafe.
The downtown pizzeria will now be under the OK Supervision (Cholov Yisroel, Pas Yisroel and Kemach Yashan – formerly under OU supervision – ironic considering the OU’s headquarters are down the block at 11 Broadway).

As they do in midtown, will be offering catering to local businesses as well.

Kaff Kaffe Takes on Chabad hechsher

After a successful 3 years in business, the owner of Kaff Kafe on 16th Avenue in Boro Park is looking to expand its clientele even past the borders of the Brooklyn neighborhood.

To help with expansion, Lubavitcher Shneur Goodman had his dairy eatery certified by another kosher supervision, Crown Heights Kosher (CHK), in addition to the certification of Rabbi Babad.

Goodman’s goal is to make an entry in the simches scene in Crown Heights with a catering service.

Since their dishes range from simple pizza and French fries to creamy pastas and gourmet cheese dishes, Goodman said he can cater any event in any price range.

“We’ve catered an upshernish for $300, and one for $3,000,” he says. “We specialize in brissim and Bar Mitzvahs, Bas Mitzvahs and more – for any budget.”

Since purchasing the store, Kaf Kaffe has made a name for themselves with delectable dairy dishes, most popular being the cheese blintzes and the fettuccini alfredo. They also offer fish, paninis, pasta, salads, and their signature Kaffeccino drink.

Some of those dishes will be served at the events in Crown Heights they are looking to cater, such as brisim, Sheva Brochos, L’chaims, and everything in between.

“We are in the process of finding a hall in the heart of Crown Heights to host simchas and parties there,” says Goodman, who notes that he recently welcomed a party planner to their staff to creatively design and set up.

A new coffee shop in a prime location in Crown

Goodbye twin-tailed mermaid. Welcome hatted chossid.

A new coffee shop in the Brooklyn neighborhood in Crown Heights is taking inspiration from the largest coffeehouse company in the world, but trying to be better.

Chocolatte, conveniently located on the ground floor of the Jewish Children’s Museum on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, will be offering signature Starbucks items.

There will, of course, be the hot, cold and flavorful coffees from the Italian brand illy and also pastries and sandwiches in a glass display case. At the counter there will be snacks and even frozen yogurt with toppings.

The difference will be in the taste, says Hillel Harel, manager of the new store and brother of the owner, R’ Levi Yitzchok Harel, a Crown Heights resident.

“We will be similar to Starbucks’ concept that we will have ready to go pastries and sandwiches for people to grab before they go on the Subway to work,” said Harel.

“But unlike Starbucks whose products are made in a mass production at a warehouse, we will be baking it in store, with a new batch every half an hour,” he said.

The closest Starbucks to Crown Heights, located in Park Slope, is frequented by many Jewish youngsters.

“We will be better and kosher,” states Harel, who has run Toast Baguette down the street (today Pomodori Pizza) and helped open his family owned Sushi Tokyo in Brooklyn.

The new shop fills the space that served as a Judaica and gift shop for the museum’s visitors. Next door is Mendy’s Deli serving glatt kosher food.

Scheduled to open before Lag Baomer next week, Chocolatte has seating for 15 people, in addition to outside seating for 40 at the museum’s dreidel sculpture and for another 18 in the building’s entrance lobby.

Chocolatte is cholov yisrael under the supervision of OK Kosher Certification. It will be open weekdays from 6 AM until 12 AM.

COCA-COLA NOT KOSHER FOR PASSOVER IN CALIFORNIA

Looking for the Coke with the yellow bottle caps in LA? SF? SD? You won’t find it this year again. According to Vosizneias.com:

Update: Kosher consumers in Los Angeles are reporting that K4P Coke is available at a few locals markets. However, the below article may still ring true as these bottles may be (illegally?) shipped from out of state. Currently not clear as to the official state rules. Will continue to investigate.

Coca-Cola may be missing from Passover feasts for the second year in a row in California.

The Coca-Cola Co. said Thursday it once again won’t be able to make “kosher for Passover” versions of its flagship cola this year because of manufacturing changes that were made in the state (of California).

A spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based company said in an email that Coca-Cola has made “good progress” in developing kosher for Passover drinks in the state but that it’s still monitoring the shelf stability of those products for quality assurance.

She said they should be available next year.

Coke directed its suppliers last year to change the way they manufacture caramel to reduce levels of the chemical 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI, after California listed it as a carcinogen. Regular Coca-Cola is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup in the United States, but the Passover version is made with sugar.

Gotham Burger Opening In UWS

The relatively new but successful Teaneck eatery, Gotham Burger, is opening a 2nd location in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood, only blocks from the new Amsterdam Burger Co. (owned by the same owners as Mike’s Bistro).

According to Great Kosher Restaurants:

They are turning the place into a sports bar/burger place with a VIP lounge. The owners promise that they will be offering the same great food that they are known for with a NYC edge (think beer in hand watching a large screen TV). Pre-paid Friday night Shabbos meals will be available once they are up and running.

Gotham Burger replaced Burgers Bar last year in Teaneck, NJ. Burgers Bar, the Israeli burger chain which had locations in Brooklyn, Cedarhurst, and Teaneck, have all closed.

The new burger joint will be opening in the former “Meat Me” located at 726 Amsterdam Ave, between W 95th & 96th streets.
