I just got my tefillin checked for $120. Besides the actual checking they also included an overall "Re-touch" on the batim for the same price. It looked like a brand new pair of Tefillin! Although I've found that there are cheaper competitors in the area, I know the Sofer personally and he is a yiras shamayim and a very trustworthy Rabbi. Therefore I rather spend an extra 15 to 20 dollars to make sure an honest and reliable person checks it. Another perk is their great service!
